FSU NAMES DEXTER CARTER NEW RBs COACH
Tallahassee Democrat
1/15/07

The final piece of Florida State's new-look offensive staff will be officially in place today with the naming of Dexter Carter as the running-backs coach.

The former FSU tailback became the leading candidate after his former teammate and current Green Bay running backs coach Edgar Bennett withdrew his name from consideration Monday afternoon.

Carter, contacted Monday night by the Tallahassee Democrat, confirmed that he has accepted the job.

Carter has no coaching experience, but said his experience in the NFL and his education (master's in business management) have him prepared for the job.

"I believe coach (Bobby) Bowden made the right decision. A lot of people think this decision is out of the box - it's not," Carter said. "My opportunity to play at a high level at running back provided me with the kind of exposure to enhance my knowledge."

Carter is a former player who Bowden has praised for his perseverance as he patiently waited for his chance behind Sammie Smith. Carter rushed for 684 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior in 1989 and was selected in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft by San Francisco. Carter finished his NFL career in 1996.
