FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain was granted his release from his football scholarship on Tuesday, one day after former offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn accepted a similar position at Tulsa.

Mustain, the heralded former Parade Magazine Player of the Year, started eight games for the Razorbacks in 2006, winning all eight before being demoted to backup status. Prior to the Capital One Bowl game on Jan. 1, Mustain had stated he would not transfer from Arkansas.

But things changed this week when Mustain's former coach at Springdale High Malzahn resigned from his position at Arkansas after one year to move into a similar role at Tulsa under new coach Todd Graham.

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt addressed the media late Tuesday, but refused to elaborate on the details of an earlier meeting between he and Mustain.
