The West Monroe pipeline that’s been to so beneficial to LSU in the past produced the second member of its 2007 recruiting class.

LSU picked up one its marquee recruits Monday evening when standout defensive end Will Blackwell —a member of the Rivals.com Top 100 — committed to the Tigers after a weekend visit to Baton Rouge. He also visited Notre Dame in October and national champion Florida in December.

“I’m really excited that he’s going to LSU,” West Monroe football coach Don Shows said.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Blackwell, who is academically qualified with a 3.5 grade-point average, joined West Monroe teammate Luther Davis, as LSU commitments. Davis, a defensive tackle, chose the Tigers just over a week ago at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Blackwell also becomes the 23rd member of the LSU recruiting class with just more than three weeks remaining to the National Signing period. More importantly, he gives the Tigers their fifth defensive lineman in the class — ranking as the nation’s No. 10 prospect by Rivals.com at his position.

Blackwell was a three-year starter and helped West Monroe to a pair of Class 5A state championships during his career. He was named to the first team Class 5A All-State team as a senior and combined for 112 tackles and nine sacks the past two seasons.
